In a corporate world where women, especially those of color, face systemic barriers to advancement, women-owned businesses are emerging as beacons of change. Despite women holding less than 10% of CEO positions in the U.S. These businesses are proving more successful and resilient than their male counterparts This shift emphasizes the unique strengths of women in leadership and the critical role of women-led enterprises in fostering a more equitable and dynamic business landscape.
“Less than 10% of the CEOs in the US are women. According to , traditional corporate settings have a broken rung that prevents qualified women leaders from progressing in their careers. Women of color fare even worse,” explains Sindhu Srivastava, CEO of
Some of the businesses created by women failed last year, compared to 58% of projects started by men, demonstrating the value and success of women-owned businesses.
“As a woman of color executive in High Tech companies in Silicon Valley, it became increasingly clear to me that I needed to create a more conscious workplace where everyone can thrive and where biases are minimized. The fastest path to creating the workplace I dreamed of, for me, was to acquire a company as a 100% owner,” states Srivastava.
For everyone, especially women who have faced historical and current prejudices across all industries, it is critical that there are more women-owned businesses so that women can start their careers and thrive throughout their lives.
Working at a women-owned business often leads to exposure to diverse perspectives and innovation, thanks to the unique insights and experiences women bring to leadership roles. This diversity fosters a creative and problem-solving work environment, where new ideas and approaches are highly valued. Such businesses typically emphasize an inclusive culture, ensuring that all employees feel valued and respected, regardless of gender. This focus on inclusivity not only enhances job satisfaction but also contributes to a positive and supportive work atmosphere. For female employees, these environments can be particularly empowering, offering role models and leaders they can relate to and learn from.
Women-owned businesses frequently prioritize work-life balance, understanding the challenges of juggling professional and personal responsibilities. Flexible work arrangements, such as remote work and adaptable hours, are common, supporting a family-friendly workplace. These companies often provide robust opportunities for mentorship and professional development, helping employees grow and advance in their careers. Strong community ties and a commitment to social responsibility give employees a sense of purpose and fulfillment beyond day-to-day tasks. Additionally, women leaders tend to foster environments where effective communication is key, and employees are encouraged to share feedback openly. Overall, these businesses strive for equitable treatment and equal opportunities for all, leading to a fair and just workplace.
Srivastava says, “Women-owned businesses are a great way to create workplaces where women can thrive and reach their full potential because women know better than anyone else what they are capable of.”
